Can Project Managers learn something from Football Managers?

Posted by Mitchell Ferguson - Aonghus IT Services on Saturday, November 10, 2012 In : Project Management

From my ten plus years of teaching MS Project and Project Management, it seems that a great way to learn on how to be a good project manager is to learn from the best; those who have done it before and have learned to avoid the pitfalls associated with strains on timelines, costs and quality.

One of my favourite authors on the subject of Project Management and leadership is John C Maxwell and I speak of him in my courses and sometimes will even show a clip or two to emphasize a point he h...

MS Powerpoint 2010 - Applying the 'Disney' Principles of Imagination

Posted by Mitchell Ferguson on Friday, September 21, 2012 In : IT Training

One of the first courses a junior trainer teaches is MS PowerPoint. Back in 2000, the idea of presentations was fairly new and even having graphics was only beginning to emerge. Businesses were not in the habit of using graphics and imaging. Businesses were in the habit of using text only and word processors had not been put aside for the new type of PC's altogether. Graphics had been the venue of advertisers and marketers who used Macintosh computers primarily; one's who could apply graphics...

My Email Inbox Is Causing Me A Nightmare!

Posted by Mitchell Ferguson on Saturday, August 25, 2012 In : IT Training

"My emails are causing me a nightmare." I often hear this while I am training our delegates. The next question usually moves to, "what can I do to organise the folders better or get rid of the one's I don't really need?"

These are both very good questions. I know the feeling myself. One of my email accounts has over 1,700 emails in the inbox alone. And, this is not counting my Sent box, which is about equal in number. About the only one that gets any regular clearance is usually the junk mai...

This year Belfast and Northern Ireland have received a massive rainfall (see Daily Mail online 18 Auguest 2012) and no it does not have anything to do with Cloud Computing, but there is connection.  With an ever-changing pattern in the weather, which now seems to occur yearly, comes a change in our patterns of computing

In fact, every two years produces a generational change in our computer usage.  While Microsoft and Apple business and design software have led much of the change, the t...

Microsoft 2010 New Features Keep MS Excel at the Top Of Software League Table

Posted by Mitchell Ferguson on Saturday, July 7, 2012 In : IT Training

The new features of Microsoft Excel 2010 are by far the most impressive seen since its advent.  Many other spreadsheet programmes have used the same or similar interface but never quite come to the level of functionality which Excel does.  And, after releasing the Microsoft 2010 version (and soon 2012), MS Excel is likely to remain at the top of the spreadsheet application league table.

What has Microsoft done for us?  The programmers at Microsoft have listened to their audience.  The people...

MS Word 2010 - Breaking New Ground..or confusing?

Posted by Mitchell Ferguson on Sunday, February 19, 2012 In : IT Training

When Microsoft Word was introduced, it was a remarkable exit from prior word processing software like I had used with programmes such as WordStar and WordPerfect. During those early years, working with the keyboard and function keys was a necessary operation. There were no icons, toolbars or other display items we take for granted today. Back then; this was the domain of Apple Mac users.

The keyboard in those days was the entry way to the computer and for many it remains so. Apple Mac users ...
